Tuesday, March 4th, 2008Hello blog. I’ve returned for two weeks. Expect at least one more post shortly after this one. First post of 08. Wow.
The American Dollar is good old post-rock. This song has some really sweet piano at the beginning and then some guitar that reminds me of that song ‘Boys of Summer’ later in the song and it all climaxes out to be really awesome. The whole album is really good.
Rudiments of a Spiritual Life [mp333]
�lafur Arnalds is a gnarly piano player. It’s classical, it’s sweet, it’s flipping peaceful. I listened to it for the first time while driving on the beach by myself, getting really close to the tides and then dodging them when they started rolling in. There were a bunch of birds that when I’d drive by them they’d all fly in front of my car and I followed them all down the beach. It matched the music well.

I found The Most Serene Republic through my friend Nat through Facebook, although I doubt she knows it. I’ll tell you what though, they’re one of the coolest bands I’ve stumbled upon lately. It’s all fairly upbeat, good vocalist, high energy, emotion-filled. Would be great to see these guys live.

Logh is so good. The first time I heard their album a few weeks ago I was just completely blown away. It’s like Jeniferever kind of but more traditional-rock-song-layout, usually something I don’t like, but they pull it off with amazing style - so much so that I had to put two mp3s up.

Maybeshewill is another band I found through Nat. Their first EP was kind of mediocre but this is the title track of their other… EP. Maybe it’s a single. I don’t know. It’s epic though. Post-rocky, but more intense like UpcDownc. Cool.

26 Is Dancier Than 4 [mp333]
TV On The Radio is OFN, so I’m not sure why I’m just finding them now. I used to listen to a song of theirs a long time ago and then remembered it the other day, so I went out to find it and it turns out they have another song that I really like that I heard on a snowboarding video once. It’s got a really retro and spacey feel to it, but the band is clearly like pop/alt/indie sounding. It’s good.
Wolf Like Me [mp333]
I’m so sad that I saw Why? on the front page of Myspace the other day. Such a cool band, fusing… hip-hopish vocals with indie-ish sound and some gnarly lyrics. Their new album isn’t as good as their old one, and that’s coming from someone who listened to the new one first so you know it’s not just because I’m elitist about it. Go forth and listen.
Sanddollars [mp333]
Balmorhea is sort of like Olafur Arnalds (above) but with more backbone to it. The sound is warmer, and it’s still all acoustic and nice for sitting around reading on a sunny day, or riding a train on a rainy day, or spending an afternoon with a lover. There’s lots of things this music is good for. Another awesome band coming out of Austin, TX.
The Summer [mp333]
I’m actually not all that familiar with Carta, as I’ve only listened through the album once. This song stuck out to me because it’s blatently post-rock but has female vocals - A combination I’ve never heard before. It’s only with this song though, check it out.
The Glass Bottom Boat [mp333]
Akira Kosemura is a pianist from Japan - way to be a stereotypically good Japanese classical musician, sir. Him and this other guy named Haruka Nakamura did a split album together becomming a superior ambient acoustic piece of art. There’s not much to it, it just sounds good and feels good. He also has a netlabel release you can find by googling his name.
Nostalgia [mp333]
Readymade is something I just found recently. It’s downtempo/somber emotion-filled post-rock with vocals and is definitely a treat. This is something to listen to while sulking about something. Watch out, it might make you cry. Cheer up.

Last but not least, Scraps of Tape should be a name you already know if you’re into post-rock at all. If it’s not, you’re definitely missing something. Listen immediately.
