Hello Summer Days

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Hello blog!

I’ll pick up some of the slack while Mick is away on his conquering of summer camps or some business like that. So here you have it, a booster pack of summer tunes that will help you get through those blistering heat waves and burger filled months.

First off (sorry I live near philly) we have Summertime by good ol’ Hancock himself, you can’t get much better afternoon time driving music [mp333]

Also how could you go for a drive in July without listening to The Temptations. If you have not had the chance to embrace your inner 70s getaway driver then now is your chance, give The Temptations a listen. [mp333]

And here are a few things to enjoy when the heat subsides and the night roles in:

Blue States, sound familiar? If you are a Zero7 fan or you just really like the movie 28 days later then you will recognize this style. [mp333]

Phoenix, they are from France. I used to think they were from New Zealand… convinced a few people, try not to do the same. Also watch the Flight of the Conchords HBO series, or atleast look them up on the youtubes. [mp333]

Anyways, this weekend I’m going to Boston to see these guys Violet Nine. They seem to be a pretty solid band, and from what I’ve heard they sound great live. I’ll report back next week and post some more music. Thanks for listening, ciao for now.

This is all stuff I’ve come across as I’ve been in San Diego. There is at least enough good stuff to make somewhat of a post out of.

Amusement Parks On Fire: I’ve posted another from this band before. If you liked that, you’ll like this. If you didn’t hear that, hear this. Shoegazer/Dream-Pop stuff.
Venus In Cancer [mp333]

Bitcrush: Some good old post-rock, which I haven’t really posted in a while. No vocals, just straight up awesome. A little bit like Glowworm I think, although I could be wrong.
An Island, A Penninsula [mp333]

Ocoai: My friend Emilio pronounces this “okay.” I found this post-metal band in a thread called “Call this post metal and I’ll beat you with a stick.” Let the stick beatings begin.
Lunoir [mp333]

September Malevolence: Not as hardcore as it sounds. Post-rocky with vocallies.
Sinister [mp333]

Windy & Carl: This was decidedly one of my favorite ambient pieces ever after my first time hearing it on the ‘Related Artists of Slow Dancing Society’ radio station on last.fm. Ambient/drone with dog noises. Really long (18 mins).
Sketch For Flea [mp333]

Working on Raptor Hideout 2 tommorow [tuesday], or today technically. I finally have an image in my head of what I want the finished product to look like and who I want my second writer to be. Should be epic.

To celebrate the release of the new Russian Circles album or something.

Russian Circles: Post-rock———-x—-Post-metal. Who knows the boundary lines anyway. This is one of the more ‘aggressive’ tracks on the album.
Youngblood [mp333]

North: Another more agressive post-rock band. Epic, etc.
Nex In March [mp333]

A Swarm of the Sun: It’s hard to describe this band. I was under the impression they were post-rock but now I’m not so sure. I like this song a lot, I think…
King of Everything [mp333]

Payolas: Bob Rock; If this name means anything to you, you should enjoy this.
I’ll Find Another (Who Can Do It Right) [mp333]

Where Is The Love [mp333]

The Burning Paris: If you like them, check out their other stuff and their new band On Fire. One of my favorites.
Building My Own Coffin [mp333]

M83: Yes, I just posted another song of theirs in the last post. I’m obsessed. Also: This song is just really terrifying, but in a really… soothing way? I don’t know what to make of it, but I love it.
Car Chase Terror [mp333]

Tephra: I know nothing about this band, but they were on a compilation CD I got from Magic Bullet Records (Sweet record label). I don’t even remember what this song sounds like but I know I like it. Your guess is as good as mine.
Through Our Veins [mp333]

Lights Out Asia: Electronic/Ambient stuff. Not quite sleeping music but maybe closer to chillout? Post-rock people like this band. Post-ambient.
Lilies On The Subway [mp333]

sleepmakeswaves: This band is really cool and this entire release is free from Lostchildren. They just released a new record which you can buy directly from them on their myspace.
One Day You Will Teach Me To Let Go Of My Fears [mp333]

That is all. Also, doesn’t a Red Sparowes/Gregor Samsa split seem weird to you? Me too. Such a thing exists. Must check out.

MiniRandom more like it??? Sorry for broken promises about new posts, it’s hard to do from school, the internet is weird and makeshift and I have to proxy around a filter to get to this site.

Circle Takes The Square: Screamo as they say. It’s fast and brutal and technical and just all-around good. Have some.
Crowquill [mp333]

Gregor Samsa: Has been posted here before. “Lovely,” “Brilliant,” and “Nice” are all words that come to mind. Gets really good near the end. This is like everyone’s favorite track, enjoy it.
Untitled 2 [mp333]

El-P: Made a small mention of this guy earlier but no mp3 or details. It’s a white guy rapping like he knows what’s up. Like, what’s really up.
Up All Night [mp333]

Owls: They broke up; I wish they hadn’t. It’s all ‘indie’ and depressing, other things too.
Everyone Is My Friend [mp333]

Crystal Castles: Neato like Justice and Daft Punk but also very different. There’s girl vocals too. Fun dancy music more in the vein of IDM.
Air War [mp333]

M. Ward: Have I wrote about this guy before? I hope so, but I’m not sure so I best be doing it again. It’s just too good to miss. After seeing the music video for this song I went out and bought the CD immediately. Look it up if you haven’t seen it. Folky.
Chinese Translation [mp333]

Jonn Serrie: I have an obsession with this man. I lost my Ixlandia CD and I got so impatient to get it back after all these weeks that I just went ahead and bought it on the Zune Marketplace, which is actually a lot cooler than I thought it would be. A lot of the stuff they offer is in mp3, not wma, including this. Space music.
Starport Indra [mp333]

M83: I sorta missed the boat on this one. M83 is so popular among the people that don’t like popular music. Like a regular bunch of Sufjan Stevens. Regardless, really really good electronic/indie that’s worth the hype it gets.
Teen Angst [mp333]

Holy Fuck: No, I’m not exclaiming profanities, this is a band. Some might say the “Post-rock sensation of the year” while most probably wouldn’t. It’s really different, has an airy sort of joyfulness to it that’s really uplifting if you’ve got the blues.
The Pulse [mp333]

Happy 4/4/08!

Two more posts coming still (One ‘featured band’ and one Netlabel highlights), but here’s some tracks I left out on the last TrickyRandom and then some new ones I didn’t think of adding. Also: I realize that I’m very inconsistant with the style in which I post these TrickyRandoms, but I’m just trying to find the perfect way, bear with me.

Burial - Cool downtempo/chillout stuff with vocals that sound like distorted RnB clips. I don’t think they are though. The first time I listened to it it sort of blew my mind because I’ve never heard anything remotely like it before. Late at night kind of stuff. (edit: I’ve been informed that this style of music is called ‘Dubstep,’ thanks internet.)
Archangel [mp333]

A Genuine Freakshow - Post-rock with little vocals, and not nearly as gnarly as it sounds. I thought they sounded like one of those freaky morbid Insane Clown Posse or Slipknot kind of bands. It’s absolutely the opposite, but the name of the song I’m posting isn’t helping either. Don’t judge it by it’s name.
Left My Blood On Your Bathroom Floor [mp333]

Aughra & Mosh Patrol - I think this album is a colab rather than a split, something I haven’t really found before. It sounds like it’s going to be metal or hardcore, but again, don’t judge these bands by their names, it’s very calm post-rock.
I Love You, Please Come Back [mp333]

The Ark - Another one of those indie bands I found in a snowboarding video. You get two tracks, the first is the track with which I discovered them by, the second is another favorite. People compare them to Alice in Videoland, but don’t be mistaken, they really don’t suck.
One Of Us Is Gonna Die Young [mp333]

Let Me Down Gently [mp333]

Emiliana Torrini - Famous for doing the “Gollum’s Song” on one of the LOTR soundtracks but that’s not how I found her (One of her albums is fully streamable on last.fm). She’s trip-hoppy; I like this song.
To Be Free [mp333]

Jesu - People often associate this band with Isis and Neurosis and Pelican and such and I have no idea why. They’re way more ambient than they are metal, but I guess it is pretty heavy ambient. Maybe if you fed metal through an ambient cheese-grater, this is what you’d get.
Conquerer [mp333]

Hot Cross - It’s real screamo, something I’m just now getting into. I don’t actually like it all that much yet, but I’m trying to. This song is pretty good. I also just found Saetia, but don’t have a favorite song yet, I’ll let you know when I do, they’re better than Hot Cross imo.
Patience and Prudence [mp333]

I hate the music of Timbaland (Not linking to myspace) and everything it stands for but Emilio had me find this remix. It’s awwwweeesooooome.
Miscommunication (Bloody Beatroots Remix) [mp333]

I just found El-P but haven’t listened to an album yet. Last.fm link.
