Efrim Menuck

If you’re at all familiar with the world of post-rock, you should already know this name. That might be a bit of an exaguration, but fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mt Zion will know what I’m talking about in which case, this post probably isn’t for you.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, or maybe a vague one, then this post is for you.

The man, the legend. Efrim. You don’t need to know his last name (But it’s Menuck, just don’t say it out loud, you’ll look like an idiot) because the name is so prominent in the world of post-rock the mention of his name will make some people’s hearts skip beats. A little over-reaction on their parts, but the man does front some of the coolest music around. A band you may not have heard of is Esmerine. It’s basically the celloist and percussionist from GY!BE together with some other people. There are no guitars, and it reminds me quite a bit of Saddleback. Efrim is involved though, of course. I like this band a lot. Have a listen.

Screaming Headless Torsos (wtf?)

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

And what a name it is!

I’d like to start off this little article by saying that the Torsos (SHT… Don’t think I’ll use that acronym) are not your grandmother’s jazz. They’re also not your father’s rock. Or yours, for that matter…

The Torsos are dead funky. DROP DEAD funky. The groove of vocalist Dean Bowman’s seemingly faux-disco Tower of Power slash Earth Wind and Fire stylings is also completely undeniable. Combine some funky (overuse of this word if I’ve ever seen it) bass playing, some wonderfully frustrated and angry guitar playing with some genuinely mind-boggling drumming and out of the musical machine comes the mutated creature known as Screaming Headless Torsos.

Screaming Headless Torsos

This album is pretty helpful if you’re interested in the band; it should say to you, “Hey, we don’t take ourselves entirely seriously, and we actually do have fun with our music.” This should scare away anyone who has delusions that the Torsos are a pretentious, overly serious group of guys.

The time for adjectives is now over; you can listen if you want.

65 Doesn’t Understand Me

Friday, August 10th, 2007

I realized it’s far too much work doing all this formatted crap business with pictures and then we write about the artist and stuff. Does anyone care? I don’t know. If they do then they can just go look it up. Since there’s a large stale time right now I decided it’s really time to write something. My posts, and I’m the only one who posts anymore, are now going to be filler free. You come for mp3s, you get mp3s… and sometimes a story.

I saw they had this on their website.

I have a story. I went to see 65daysofstatic live in Seattle with Emilio at this greasy little place called El Corazon. It was intense. First this crappy wheeemo band called You In Series came on. They were… ehmmm. Anyways, after them 65days came on. Coolest show I’ve ever seen live, but then again, this is only the third live show I’ve been to. I kept thinking that they were rocking out so hard that if they crashed into eachother something would explode. I hoped that didn’t happen and it didn’t, so that was good. The bassist is insane. He’s like that one zombie (Yes, I realize they weren’t zombies) on 28 Days Later that they had tied up in the yard at the military base camp; He was different though. Tall and skinny, like a really big skeleton. He did all sorts of sweet things, like drive his bass into the ground like a jackhammer, rub his strings on one of the cymbals, and even did his own little drum solo. I bought a shirt and their newest album The Destruction of Small Ideas. I’m here to share them with you. If I would only recommend one song to you, it would be Radio Protector. go for it.
