The Preservation Act.

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

After Andrew from Preservation contacted me the other day about my promise to upload the Saddleback album, I sort of had a little epiphony and decided to draw up some guidelines. Because of the party that brought this little change of heart about, I decided to name it after them - Cheers! Make this the first amendment of the RHPro constitution.

Rocking out at Picnic Rock

So I just got a job, and what’s cool about it is that I can listen to music  the entire day. I’m working a wholesale nursery and there’s no customer involvement at all. I come, I do my work, I go home. So I decided to bring along my iRiver and listen to some stuff during my extremely long eight-hour days. While mostly listen to upbeat things that I can groove to while working (Scheduled for next blog post), I sometimes switch to the occasional Post-Rock that I haven’t listening to much of. And that’s how I rediscovered Saddleback.

Saddleback is the work of a man name Tony Dupe, who lives isolated in a little valley near Sydney, Australia. The album is entitled Night Maps and is the second one he’s released under the Saddleback name. The place where he lives, in my mind, must be where a lot of inspiration for his music comes in. I’ve found a way to describe it - Creepy Pseudo-Old-Western Post-Rock. It paints pictures of sepia overcast skies, dirty cowboys, and dark murderous intent. It’s not really like anything at all that I’ve heard before in the entire Post-Rock genre. It’s not happy music, I can say that. There’s a very intricate quality to it as well. So many instruments that push each other around give it a really cool quality and  rough sound. The tracks all tie in together, but all have very distinct differences. Indeed a work of masterpiece, but I understand it’s not for everyone. I didn’t like it at first, but it took a few listens to really appreciate it. If you don’t try to compare it to anything, you’ll have a better chance of enjoying it for what it is. This is definitely something I plan on supporting with my hard-earned money.

The old deal stands, interest in the entire album through comment comments and I’ll upload it for ye. The label has requested that I not upload the album, and I plan on keeping my word. No album upload on this one guys. Preservation, thanks for being cool about it!
